We are thrilled to announce that on 9 October 2025, REMARCO was selected by the Interreg North Sea Monitoring Committee to expand its consortium and formally integrate a Norwegian dimension. This milestone marks a significant leap forward for the project’s scientific, technological, and policy impact across Northern Europe.

The extension brings in new Norwegian partners, including the Defence Museum and the Arctic University of Norway, and strengthens the Advisory Board—already featuring the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI)—with the addition of Akvaplan-niva, a leading institution in sustainable aquatic ecosystem research.

Key Highlights of the Norwegian Extension:

  • Iconic Wreck Sites: The research will now cover four historically and environmentally significant shipwrecks, with the Tirpitz serving as the primary field test site.

  • Exploring Unique Environments: Arctic and sub-Arctic waters provide a rare opportunity to study legacy pollutants in sensitive ecosystems, complementing earlier North Sea research.

  • Cutting-Edge Monitoring Technology: The MesoSens prototype sensor will be deployed at Tirpitz, paired with hyperspectral imaging to deliver high-resolution, on-site contaminant mapping.

  • Access to New Data Sources: Norwegian partners contribute critical datasets from wrecks and coastal salvage sites, filling key knowledge gaps in marine pollution studies.

  • Policy and Stakeholder Engagement: Momentum from recent expeditions will strengthen public engagement and help translate research into actionable environmental policies.

This expansion is a natural next step for REMARCO, broadening its geographical reach, deepening scientific insights, and driving innovation in the sustainable management of underwater cultural and environmental heritage.

We are excited to seize this opportunity to advance marine monitoring, risk assessment, and sustainable stewardship across Northern Europe.
